I used to be one of the most anti-academics person you could meet. In high school I did pretty well in all of my classes and got into Berkeley, UCLA, USC, etc. But wasn’t really feeling it from the jump. I ultimately ended up at USC. Not because I wanted to, but because the environment I grew up in said, “the question is not if you’re going to college, it’s which one.” Hell, if it were up to me I would’ve been done after high school. But, people were like you’re so smart, you’d be stupid not to go.
Well, I didn’t even last til the end of my 1st semester for reasons I might get into later. For the next few years I would alternate between going to school and taking a “leave of absence”, until I was finally like fvck this sh*t, I’m never going back. In between that I would always have a business going that would bring in enough to get me what I wanted. So, it’s not like I ever had a real reason to finish.
That was all cool until around earlier this year when I got tired of the grind and working 24/7 to my own detriment. So, I decided to trade in my hustles for a “real job” with vacation time and a 401k. But here’s the catch: you can’t make anything other than minimum wage without having a degree or some other trade. One of my close friends put everything into perspective by saying that in order to play the game, I’m going to need a degree. At first I was like yeah, whatever, fvck that sh*t. But now I’m seeing the truth in that statement. Life is comparable to a game and you need to have some type of higher education to play. And I’m not saying it needs to come from a college either.
I have all the experience when it comes to digital marketing and social media. But, companies won’t give you the time of day without a degree on your resume. So, here I am back in school again for the umpteenth time and already feel like saying fvck this sh*t again. But, this time in it to win it. Not because I think that you have to have a degree to be a millionaire, but because I’m lazy and want a 9 to 5 where I can get paid to bullsh*t at my desk all day like normal folk do.
