Saturday Spotlight: say A (Interview)
I know it’s been a minute since I last hit you off with a W.Coast.K interview. So, let’s make up for lost time with this insightful interview I just did with Inglewood’s say A. If the name sounds familiar, it could be because he’s opened for major acts like The Game and Curren$y. Or because his new video, “Photoshop” was just featured on the site. Haha.
Either way, I’d say you should get to know say A, as an artist and overall dope individual. So, catch the interview below to learn what say A says on success, networking in the industry and what he loves about Inglewood the most.
When did you make the move from Oakland to Inglewood?
I moved around a lot. Im originally from Oakland, moved to Charlotte, NC in high school, then moved back to California in college. I went to UC Riverside where I played basketball and after I graduated moved out to the LA area in 2014.
What do you love about Inglewood the most?
Inglewood reminds me of Oakland.. its very diverse. You’ll see a little bit of everything! I also love the fact that Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles is literally right around the corner from me!
When did you know you could do this for the rest of your life?
Once i started doing music back in college i knew! I would find myself ready to get home from practice or games to write a song and record something to let my friends hear it. When i started to enjoy the writing process more than playing basketball is when i knew this is something i really wanted to do!
Your first EP, #WhatToSay was pretty on point. What was the creative process behind it?
The process for that took almost 2 years. I was living in Charlotte when i first started working on it. It originally had a completely different sound. When i moved back to Cali with that project i just felt like i was in a different place so i started to record more material. None of the orginal songs made the last cut. I actually changed the track list 4 times! Eventually my team just said you have to put it out our you’ll keep making changes and you’ll never release it. Im a perfectionist so I’m always tryning to out do myself.
You’ve opened for major acts, like The Game, Ab-Soul and Curren$y. How much would you say building relationships along the way has opened up you to opportunities like that?
Its crazy because all the acts that I’ve opened for I’ve never really got a chance to develop any kind of relationship with them. Im sure that will change in the future. The only artist I actually have a cool relationship with is Sylvan Lacue. Thats the homie!
What type of vibes can listeners expect from your upcoming #MoreToSay project?
The vibe for #MoreToSay will be a mixture between Say It Aint So and Slow Motion. You can expect some good lyrics and wordplay over smooth production with a little bounce to it.
How do you measure success?
Success to me is when you find happiness doing what you love to do. You can have all the success in the world but if your not happy with what you’ve done to gain that success, what was that journey for? Also being able to take care of your loved ones is how i measure success! Gotta be able to take care of the ones that supported you.
