Saturday Spotlight: Terrace Martin – ‘Velvet Portraits’ (Album)
Sometimes you just want to vibe out without thinking about complex rhyme schemes or spending half your lifetime trying to figure out what the hell the lyrics are in the first place. That’s where West Coast’s Terrace Martin comes in, with 14 tracks of funk and fusion on the oh so soulful, “Velvet Portraits.” The perfectly planned piece perfectly captures the essence of living in the Sunshine State, as it takes you through various moods and aesthetics, from 70s consciousness and late 80s R&B to West Coast funk and Blues. And if that’s not enough for you, you can also catch guest appearances from frequent collaborators Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Uncle Chucc, Tone Trezure and the world-renown Talkbox.
With tracks titled “Turkey Taco” and “Tribe Called West,” I automatically knew I was in for something dope and different when I heard ‘Velvet Portraits’ finally dropped yesterday. As someone that’s been following Terrace’s career over the years, it’s cool to see his growth as an artist and for him to finally be getting the recognition he deserves, as a true artist in every sense of the word. As a matter of fact, I was just bumpin’ ‘Here, My Dear‘ the other day… Vibing out to this takes me back to my jazz band days at Crenshaw High School though, where I really got into music (
good great times). With all that said, I’d have to say that ‘Velvet Portraits’ is one of those for the grown, sexy and drama-free. If that is you, catch the stream below and be sure to support real music by hitting that “Buy Now” link.
