The eclectic collective know as Overdoz., provided their take on current race relations with their latest release, Rich White Friends. The track was produced by Hit-Boy and the visual directed by Calmatic. The fast-paced and visually appeasing visual takes place in a WASP frat house, where Overdoz. is hired to provide the entertainment for the night.
During the course of the day, some wild sh*t goes down, leading up to the climax when one of the frat members calls a black student trying to study for finals a n*gga. One can only sense the irony in how the black people were the one’s taken off in handcuffs with no questions asked, while the white guys only got questioned as they effectively played the victim role.
Out of all of the politically charged tracks and visuals that have been coming out lately, Rich White Friends is the one I can relate to the most. While going to private school for a cool minute, I would witness a lot of what went down in Rich White Friends. For instance, I would be all up in my books with no life, while everybody else with nothing to lose would party all week and never show up to class. And not to mention the seemingly weekly drug overdoses.
All I’m going to say is white privilege is real y’all and even now more apparent than ever. So, I don’t even blame Overdoz. for making this song. Sometimes you’re faced with the question of whether or not to assimilate and get this money or “keep it real” and stay broke for the rest of your life. As Diddy so eloquently put it a few years back, “I got my billions up, fuckin with dem white folks. Now I don’t give a fuck, ’cause I’m richer than dem white folks”
