Macklemore Grammy Wins: A Matter Of Race Or Relative Wackness
I’m not one to sit around watching awards shows, so I would have had no idea of who took home the Grammy for best rap album if it weren’t for everybody having their panties in a bunch about it all over social media tonight. If I were to call it, Kendrick Lamar would’ve had it in the bag, like everyone else thought. Nobody was expecting Macklemore of all people to take home multiple awards in the rap category.
Now I’m not saying the dude isn’t nice. But in a comparison between him and Kendrick Lamar, he comes no where close. Sure he makes catchy hooks and tongue tying lyrics, but there’s not much to make you go into deep though or relate to. At least not anybody from the hood. Hip hop was birthed from the struggle and Good Kid M.A.A.D. City exemplified that with it’s story, that unfortunately a lot of people can relate to.
I’m sure that if it was a black kid that beat Kendrick, people would still be upset because he deserved it. Hands down. But, the fact that Macklemore is some white dude from Seattle just adds fire to the flame. I heard that Grammys go out to the most popular songs/artists, so I could see how technically Macklemore could have won.
Most paying consumers of hip hop these days are white. I just even saw an Instagram pic of Kendrick Lamar’s House of Blues set tonight and not nan one black hand was spotted in the front row. So, I guess we can either keep complaining about how real artists never get recognized or start voting with our wallets. That of course, is if you’re able.
