Last Black Friday, while shopping in the madness that can be Target, I was surprised to find out that legendary producer and current executive music producer of the hit TV show, Empire, Timbaland (Timothy Mosley) had just put out a memoir in conjunction with author, Veronica Chambers. Me being the avid reader I am and following his career since the “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” and “Fat Rabbit” days, I just knew that The Emperor of Sound would be next on my reading list. So, I took a picture for future reference and bought it on Amazon the next day (don’t act like you don’t do that either).
I was already in the middle of La La Anthony‘s Power Playbook (which is another great read), so I didn’t get into The Emperor of Sound until about a week later. And I must say that it was everything I expected and more. The memoir gives a glimpse into the life of Timbaland, his journey and plenty of takeways on life. From bad dealings with Jodeci‘s DeVante Swing and his Da Bassment Cru, to jamming in the zone with Aaliyah, Jay-Z, Madonna and fellow southerner, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland’s journey is inspiring and a motivational reminder to stay true to your dreams no matter how deviated the road may get.
I was blown away and inspired by Timbaland’s humbleness throughout his journey, as well as his work ethic and dedication to only putting out the best of the best. Often times it’s easy to let everything go to your head once you get a little taste of success and fame. But, Timbaland continues to remain humble and true to his Southern Gentleman roots. It was also interesting to learn that he and Pharrell Williams go way back in the day and also formed a group together (Surrounded by Idiots). Which just goes to show you never know who somebody may become. So, it’s best to show everybody love along the way.
The Emperor of Sound is a relatively easy read, written in a down to earth and easy to digest manner. But, chock full of wisdom and insight that will serve aspiring producers, musicians and regular Joes on the way to greatness well. Although I recommend reading the book from beginning to end, here are a few takeaways that still stand out in my mind, almost a month later.
